What causes computer overheating problems?

There are several causes for a computer to overheat among them are:
  • Heat buildup; caused by:blocked vents filled with dust and hair, or failed fans.
    • Can also be caused by the device resting on or being smothered by something like a blanket.
  • Being unable to dissipate heat; caused by:
    • The ambient air temperature being too hot for the cooling system to keep up. Frequently occurs during winter when under-desk heaters are running, pumping hot air in to the computer.
    • Overclocking in conjunction with an inadequate cooling solution.
    • An inadequate cooling solution.
    • Platter based hard drives have a motor that rotates. Particularly visible in Storage Area Networks and Network Attached Storage. (SAN and NAS respectively)
